This web-based work explores an alternate side of the internet without homogenisation and consumerist focus. It is heavily informed by the Indie Web (thriving now through webrings such as yesterweb), personal websites, and speculative writings from other key developmental periods in the history of the internet, the 90’s and 2006/2007 (when Web 1 and Web 2 were being theorised about).

The project also looks at how customisation and design lead to humans choosing to emulate real life in digital spaces – calling their website groups “domains” and organising their desktops like real desks. I wanted to use digital-species type characters to explore that idea of digital space and emphasise the personality of the indie web; how it is people focused and not algorithmic or advertising-led. With this work, I want to encourage users to explore the less mainstream internet for themselves and foster creativity with the tools available to us in the digital age.

Displayed as an interactive experience at the degree show mimicking a regular internet user's home computer set up.
